Homestead Trolley and the Roads Around Sunstone

In this article
The Homestead Trolley is a free city bus service that runs three routes through Homestead, and it is one of the perks of living inside city limits at Sunstone. You do not pay a fare. You can track each trolley on a phone app. And on top of the everyday routes, the city runs a seasonal free trolley to Everglades and Biscayne National Parks.
This guide explains how the trolley works, where it goes, and the main roads you will use from Sunstone, without guessing at drive times.

The Three Homestead Trolley Routes
The city's trolley brochure names three routes. Here is a plain summary of each.
Downtown route
This route runs along Krome Avenue in the historic downtown, with stops near the Historic Museum and at Homestead Station. It also runs along West Mowry Drive and SW 4th Street. Krome Avenue is the main north-south street downtown; read more in our guide to Krome Avenue in Homestead.
Campbell route
This route runs along Campbell Drive for much of its length. Stops listed in the brochure include a Publix shopping center, a Lowe's, Leon Medical Center and the main hospital entrance on Campbell Drive.
Lucy route
This route has stops along SE 8th Street, Krome Avenue, Campbell Drive, SE 12th Avenue and Palm Drive, which the brochure also labels SW 344th Street. One stop sits at SE 8th Street and US 1.
The brochure marks transfer points where routes meet, so you can switch trolleys.

Which stop is closest to Sunstone?
The brochure does not name a Sunstone stop, and routes can change. Open the Trolley Tracker app or the city's route map, enter your homesite address and find the nearest stop. Do this before you count on the trolley for daily trips.
Changes Coming to the Routes
The city says it finished a Trolley Efficiency Study of its three routes. The new planned routes aim to connect riders to schools, shopping centers, hospitals and Miami-Dade County rapid transit stations. The city also says route segments will overlap so riders can transfer between trolley lines and Miami-Dade Transit Metrobus lines. The city held public workshops on the changes. Check the city page for the latest maps.
The Free Trolley to the National Parks
Homestead calls itself the "Gateway to Everglades and Biscayne National Parks." The city runs a seasonal free trolley to both parks, with an extra stop at Homestead Bayfront Park.
What the city lists:
The main boarding stop is Homestead Station at 4 South Krome Avenue.
One trolley goes to Everglades National Park, with a guided trip to Royal Palm and the Anhinga Trail.
The other goes to Biscayne National Park and Homestead Bayfront Park.
Both national parks offer free park admission to trolley riders, according to the city.
Space is limited, so the city recommends a reservation.
Service runs on set dates each season, so check the city's National Parks Trolley page for the current schedule. If you would rather drive to the Everglades, our guide to the Everglades National Park entrance explains the route.

Trolley Rider Rules to Know
The city's trolley brochure lists rules for every rider. In plain words:
No smoking on the trolley.
Carry only the packages you can easily hold.
Seats near the door go first to seniors and riders with disabilities.
All trolleys are wheelchair accessible, and the driver can help you board.
No eating or drinking on board.
Trolleys stop only at marked stops.
Pull the cord, or tell the driver, at least one block before your stop.
Stay seated until the trolley fully stops.
Only service animals are allowed.
Wear shirts and shoes.
Use headphones for music or videos.
Lost something? The brochure says to hand found items to the driver, who sends them to City Hall. You can call City Hall at (305) 224-4775 with questions.
Trolley or Car? A Simple Way to Decide
Use the trolley for trips that line up with a route, like a run to a shopping center on Campbell Drive or an outing downtown. Keep the car for trips outside the city or outside trolley hours. The weekend schedule is shorter, so plan Saturday and Sunday rides for the late morning and early afternoon.
Tips for the National Parks Trolley
Book a seat early, since the city says space is limited.
Board at Homestead Station on Krome Avenue, the main stop the city lists.
Check the city page for the season's dates before you plan a trip.
