Baseboard Styles: The Square-Edge Trim and Doors Inside Pepperwood Homes

In this article
Pepperwood homes come with one baseboard style, and Lennar names it clearly: ""5 1/2"" Modern Square Edge baseboards."" That is a flat, simple trim with a square top edge. This guide explains the common baseboard styles, what Lennar's trim package at Pepperwood includes, how it ties in with the doors, and how to care for it.
What a Baseboard Is
A baseboard is the strip of trim that runs along the bottom of a wall, where the wall meets the floor. It covers the gap at the floor line and protects the bottom of the wall from bumps, shoes and vacuums.
Baseboards come in many shapes. The shape, or profile, changes how a room looks.

Common Baseboard Styles
Here are a few baseboard styles you will hear about when you shop for homes:
Style | What it looks like | Feel |
|---|---|---|
Square edge (flat) | A flat board with a squared-off top | Clean and modern |
Rounded edge | A flat board with a softly rounded top | Simple, a little softer |
Colonial | A board with curves and steps along the top | Traditional |
Tall or layered | A wide board, sometimes with extra trim on top | Formal |
These are general style names. Builders and trim shops may use their own names too. Always look at the real trim in the model home.
Baseboard Styles at Pepperwood: Square Edge
Lennar's Pepperwood list says ""5 1/2"" Modern Square Edge baseboards."" Here is what each part means:
5 1/2"" is the height of the baseboard, in inches, from the floor up.
Square Edge means the top of the board is cut flat and square, with no curves.
Modern is Lennar's word for the look.
This list is the same on all four Pepperwood plans: the Beachstone, Driftwood, Coral Bay and Marshlight.
The Rest of the Trim Package
Baseboards work with the other trim in a home. Lennar lists these interior items at Pepperwood:
""2 panel square interior doors""
""3 1/2"" interior door casing""
""Lever Stylish door hardware""
""Rocker-style switches throughout""
""Marble window sills""
Door casing is the trim around a door frame. Lennar lists it at 3 1/2 inches wide.
2 panel square interior doors have two flat, square panels on the face of each door. Square panels and a square-edge baseboard share the same straight-line look.
Lever hardware means door handles you push down, not round knobs. Levers can be easier to use with full hands.
Rocker-style switches are the wide, flat light switches you press at the top or bottom.
Marble window sills are the flat ledges at the bottom of the windows.
Put together, the trim at Pepperwood follows a clean, square style. The kitchen uppers follow it too. Lennar lists ""Shaker Style 42” upper cabinets,"" which have a flat center panel and a square frame.

How the Trim Meets the Walls
Your baseboards sit right against the walls. At Pepperwood, Lennar lists ""Orange Peel walls"" and ""Designer Sherwin Williams paint."" The line where the textured wall meets the smooth baseboard is a spot to check on your walk-through. Read about the orange peel wall texture and knockdown ceilings to know what to look for.
Why Square-Edge Baseboards Are Easy to Live With
Owners often like square-edge trim for practical reasons:
Easy to dust. A flat top has no grooves to trap dust.
Easy to paint. Fewer curves means fewer tricky spots for a brush.
Goes with many styles. A plain board works with modern or classic furniture.
There is one trade-off. A flat top shows dust a bit more, because there is nothing to hide it. A quick wipe fixes that.
Caring for Your Baseboards
Dust weekly with a dry cloth or a vacuum brush.
Wipe scuffs with a damp cloth and a drop of mild soap.
Dry right away. Do not leave water sitting on painted trim.
Touch up chips with matching paint. Ask your builder rep for the exact trim paint color and sheen at closing.
Check the caulk line along the top edge. Small gaps can show up over time. A thin bead of paintable caulk closes them.
Check your warranty papers before you fix anything in the first year. Lennar's Pepperwood pages list a ""2-10 Home buyers Warranty"" and ""Manufacturers Warranties for A/C, Appliances and Fixtures."" Ask what is covered for trim and paint.
What to Check at Your Final Walk-Through
Before closing, look closely at the trim in every room:
Are the baseboard joints tight at the corners?
Is the caulk line along the top neat and full?
Are there dents or scuffs from the move-in of appliances?
Do the doors close without rubbing the casing?
Do the lever handles latch firmly?
Point out any problems and ask for them on the walk-through list. Take photos too.

Other Finish Details Lennar Lists
Trim is part of a bigger set of finish details. Here are a few more items from Lennar's Pepperwood list that you will see near the baseboards and doors:
Secondary bathrooms: ""Luxury Raised Vanity Height,"" ""Full width vanity 42"" high mirrors"" and ""12x24 wall tile with 2x2 floor tile in showers.""
Closets: ""Vinyl-clad ventilated shelving in all closets.""
Laundry: ""12"" Ventilated Vinyl coated Shelfing"" (Lennar's spelling).
Ceilings: ""9'4"" ceilings,"" and ""8' ceilings on second floor"" in the two-story Marshlight.
Front door: an ""Insulated 8' lite front door.""
On your tour, look at how the baseboard meets the tile in the bathrooms and how it runs inside the closets. These small spots show the care in the finish work.
Baseboards and the Way the House Is Built
Trim is the last layer. Under it are the walls themselves. At Pepperwood, Lennar lists ""Concrete block Construction, wood second floor."" Our post on what it means to own a concrete block house explains what sits behind the drywall.
Baseboards in Each Room Type
The same baseboard runs through each home, but the rooms differ by plan. For example, only the Marshlight has a formal dining room, per Lennar. If you are picking a plan partly for how a room will look with guests, read which Pepperwood plans have a formal dining room.
