Old Cutler Road and Getting Around Cutler Bay: A Guide for Capistrano Buyers

"Old Cutler Road is a historic road in Miami-Dade County. It starts near Coral Gables, runs through Pinecrest and Palmetto Bay, and passes into the Town of Cutler Bay. It is only one of the ways to get around this part of the county. Other main routes are US-1, also called South Dixie Highway, Florida's Turnpike, the South Dade TransitWay, and local buses. This guide names roads and connections only. It gives no drive times or distances, because those change.

What Old Cutler Road Is

The Town of Cutler Bay's history page tells how the road began. The first residents of the old town of Cutler cut a trail that joined Cutler to Coconut Grove. The Town says that trail ""was the beginning of what is, today, Old Cutler Road."" You can read the story on the Town's history page.

Today the road is part of daily life in the Town. The Town of Cutler Bay owns Coastal Ridge Preserve, an 8.43-acre property at 18551 Old Cutler Road. That address tells you the road runs through the Town. The Town's Coastal Ridge Preserve page has more.

For the route itself, we used Wikipedia as a second source, and we label it here. Wikipedia's Old Cutler Road article says the road begins at Cocoplum Circle in Coral Gables. It says the road then passes through Pinecrest and Palmetto Bay. It enters Cutler Bay after it crosses SW 184th Street. It also says the road was named a State Historic Highway in 1974. Please check any turn-by-turn detail on a current map.

Old Cutler Road and Capistrano: What We Can and Cannot Say

Capistrano's sales office is at 10103 Bahama Drive, Cutler Bay, FL 33189. The homes are on Bahama Drive and Bahia Drive. Map data from OpenStreetMap places Bahama Drive in the Cutler Ridge part of Cutler Bay.

We have not confirmed which named road connects Capistrano to Old Cutler Road, so we will not guess. Please do not assume Old Cutler Road is the road at your front door. The best step is to look at the site plan when you visit. We can point out the streets that lead in and out and show you the map together.

Both Capistrano plans are one-story homes. The Destin and the Fraser each have 4 bedrooms, 3 baths and a 3-car garage. Our Destin versus Fraser guide shows how they differ.

South Dixie Highway (US-1)

US-1 is the long north-south highway through this part of Miami-Dade. Locals call it South Dixie Highway. The state road number is SR 5, and Florida's Turnpike project pages write it as ""SR 5 (US 1).""

Some places you may know sit on South Dixie Highway. Southland Mall is at 20505 S Dixie Hwy. Coral Castle is at 28655 S Dixie Hwy in Homestead. The Town's history page also names Eureka Drive, also called SW 184th Street, where it meets US 1. If you like to plan by landmarks, these are good ones.

Caribbean Boulevard is another road to know. Cutler Bay Town Hall is at 10720 Caribbean Boulevard. A Turnpike exit also carries the name, and we cover that next.

Florida's Turnpike

Florida's Turnpike here is state road SR 821. Its own maps show three exits that matter to Cutler Bay buyers:

Exit

Road name on the Turnpike map

11

Hainlin Mill Dr. (SW 216th St.)

12

Caribbean Blvd. / U.S. 1 / SW 211th St.

13

Quail Roost Dr. (Eureka Dr.)

The Turnpike's project page also describes interchanges at Hainlin Mill Road (SW 216th Street) and Cutler Ridge Boulevard (SW 211th Street). Exit numbers and names can change over time. Check the Florida's Turnpike site for the current list before you go.

Headed south to Biscayne National Park? The National Park Service says the visitor center at 9700 SW 328th Street in Homestead can be reached from the Turnpike or from US Highway 1. Its directions name Turnpike Exit 6 (Speedway Boulevard). See the NPS directions page. For more ideas near home, read our post on things to do near Cutler Bay.

The South Dade TransitWay and Metro Express

Miami-Dade County runs a busway called the South Dade TransitWay. It has a bus rapid transit line called Metro Express. Bus rapid transit means buses that use their own lanes, so they are not stuck in the same traffic as cars.

According to Miami-Dade's Metro Express page, the service has 14 stations. They stretch from the SW 344th Street Park-and-Ride to Dadeland South Metrorail Station. The county says the stations sit just west of US-1 along the TransitWay. The line serves the Village of Pinecrest, the Village of Palmetto Bay, the Town of Cutler Bay, the City of Homestead and Florida City.

The county lists park-and-ride locations at SW 344 Street, SW 296 Street, SW 244 Street, SW 200 Street and SW 184 Street, among others. Its Metro Express service page has the current list and any service notices.

Town Buses and On-Demand Rides

The Town also has two local services. The Town Circulator is Metrobus Local Route 500. MetroConnect is an on-demand service. It gives rides to and from the South Dade TransitWay and anywhere inside the Town boundaries, booked with a mobile app or by phone. Both are on the Town's transportation page, along with route maps.

Hours, routes and fares can change. Check the Town page or call Miami-Dade Trip Planning at 311 before you count on a bus.

Tips for Learning Your Own Route

Roads are easier to learn with a plan. Try these steps before you buy:

  1. Put 10103 Bahama Drive in a map app and switch to the street view.

  2. Find the nearest Turnpike exit from the list above.

  3. Find the nearest TransitWay station on the county's Metro Express page.

  4. Write down the roads to your work, your school and your family.

For schools, use the lookup at Miami-Dade County Public Schools with the exact address. For a wider look at the Town, read our guide to living in Cutler Bay and our post on dining and shopping near Capistrano. Learn more about Capistrano on our community page.
